Vercel Web Analytics Installation Report

Summary

Successfully installed and configured Vercel Web Analytics for the DocuScan Next.js application following the official Vercel documentation (https://vercel.com/docs/analytics/quickstart).

Changes Made

1. Package Installation

  • Installed @vercel/analytics package (v2.0.1) using npm
  • Updated package.json with the new dependency
  • Updated package-lock.json with the complete dependency tree

2. Code Changes

Modified: app/layout.tsx

  • Added import statement: import { Analytics as VercelAnalytics } from "@vercel/analytics/next"
  • Added the <VercelAnalytics /> component to the root layout, placed after the existing custom Analytics component and before the footer
  • Used an alias (VercelAnalytics) to avoid naming conflicts with the existing custom Analytics component

Implementation Details

The implementation follows the official Vercel documentation for Next.js App Router:

  • Analytics component is placed in the root layout file to ensure it tracks all pages
  • The component is added near the end of the body, which is the recommended placement
  • No configuration options were needed; the default settings will work once the project is deployed to Vercel

Testing

Build Test: The project builds successfully with npm run build

  • All 71 pages generated without errors
  • No TypeScript compilation errors
  • Build completed in 35.2s

Next Steps

To complete the setup and start collecting analytics data:

  1. Enable Analytics in Vercel Dashboard:

    • Navigate to the Analytics section in your Vercel project dashboard
    • Click the "Enable" button
    • This creates tracking routes at /_vercel/insights/*
  2. Deploy the Changes:

    • Deploy this update to Vercel using vercel deploy or by pushing to the connected Git repository
    • Analytics will automatically start collecting data once deployed
  3. Verify Functionality:

    • After deployment, visit your site and check the browser's Network tab
    • Look for requests to /<unique-path>/view which confirm analytics is working
    • View analytics data in the Vercel dashboard's Analytics section

Notes

  • The existing custom Analytics component (from @/components/Analytics) continues to work alongside Vercel Analytics
  • The custom component handles PostHog and Sentry tracking with user consent
  • Vercel Analytics will track page views automatically without requiring user consent (as it's first-party analytics)
  • Both analytics systems can coexist without conflicts
